Philly Inky on the situtation in Iran.
- Another important message - this one long overdue - came recently from Washington. The Bush administration and a bill sponsored by Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) would increase aid to Iranian pro-democracy groups from $3 million annually to $85 million. The support would help political, human-rights and labor organizations, including the IHRDC, and promote TV broadcasts, Internet sites and student exchanges.
It would be nice if such a smart, strategic investment took care of the Iran problem. But first, the aid program has to work, and that means, among other things, ensuring the money goes to those with credibility among Iranians, not just Washington insiders. Second, a democracy movement could take years to produce positive results. What if the ruling clerics are in a hurry to make good on their pledge to destroy Israel?
So, no, pro-democracy support cannot be the only weapon. More is required: United Nations condemnation, sanctions that hurt the regime more than the people, possible military action. Prepare for the worst.
And in the meantime, help Iran's best, and ensure their voices of protest are heard.
