Filibuster?

The Democrats have a difficult question. Its going to be a question of winning over their base or showing themselves to be a responsible party understanding that elections matter, meaning the president picks the judges.
What do I mean? If the Democratic party is successful in getting their caucus to vote against Judge Alito [So far only Ben Nelson of NE is voting FOR Judge Alito] that would mean that Alito would fall short of 60 votes. If Alito falls short of 60 votes you can bet that the left will be demanding a filibuster on what they believe is the most extreme nominee since Robert Bork.
Here's the thing. If the Democrats do not filibuster their money from their party activists will dry up. The Democrats are already way behind in funding, as this Washington Post story from yesterday indicates.
The Republican party is very adept at spending money and desperately wants Rick to win. The Democrats won't be able to match the onslaught and answer the attacks.
So which will it be? An up or down vote lets them to seem reasonable to the public but isolates their base. A filibuster excites the base but puts them outside of the mainstream of America.
There are no easy answers; only tough choices for Democrats when it comes to Judge Alito
