The USA Patriot Act and Spineless Senators
Reuters is reporting that the Senate finally voted to extend the USA Patriot Act--if only for six months. This comes in the wake of the NSA controversy Rich mentioned and four Republican senators' defection on Friday during the first reauthorization vote.
As we all know, Rick Santorum is not perfect. He showed a remarkable lack of principle by opposing Pat Toomey's Senate bid last year--the fruits of which we are all now seeing in Arlen Specter's awful chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee, as even his then-backer Hugh Hewitt now admits. But as Chris has said before, no one is perfect, and and as Rich's last post emphasizes, Santorum is getting some very important things right. As important as the Toomey fight was, the War on Terror is more important. Losing the former didn't mean the death of our civilization, but the latter would.
Santorum is providing an infusion of backbone into an otherwise spineless Senate on that issue--and we need him to stay. After all, do you trust Bob Casey to stand up to Harry "We Killed the Patriot Act" Reid and Chuck Schumer if he wins this race?
